Sammy quits Tests as Ramdin takes over Windies

Sammy quits Tests as Ramdin takes over WindiesSt John`s, Antigua and Barbuda: Darren Sammy retired from Test cricket just hours after being replaced by Denesh Ramdin as West Indies captain.

Sammy, 30, had been in charge of the Test team since October 2010.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said that he will remain in charge of the Twenty20 international squad.

Sammy played in 38 Tests, captaining in 30 of those appearances.

"Darren Sammy has formally notified the West Indies Cricket Board of his decision to retire from Test cricket," said a WICB statement yesterday.

"Sammy has also informed the Board of his decision to continue to make himself available for selection for the other formats of the game."

Wicketkeeper/batsman Ramdin, 29, has played 56 Tests in addition to 109 one-day internationals and 46 Twenty20 internationals.

"We thank Darren for his energetic and resolute leadership over the past four years and we continue to see his role as the Twenty20 captain as a critical one," said West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) president Dave Cameron.

Ramdin said he was honoured to be named the new Test skipper.

"It is an honour to be named as captain of the West Indies Test team. This is a huge opportunity and as a unit we are capable of representing the people of the West Indies," Ramdin said.

"I am taking over from Darren who did a good job while he was at the helm. He is a very humble and hardworking cricketer and during his time at the helm we won six matches and he gave his all to the job.

"My first assignment will be against New Zealand at home and this promises to be a very exciting series."

Ramdin`s first challenge in his new role will be the West Indies versus New Zealand Test in Jamaica starting on June 8. The second Test at the Queen`s Park Oval will be his first as Test captain on home Trinidad soil.

West Indies will now have three different captains for the three international formats -- Ramdin for Tests, Sammy with the T20 side and Dwayne Bravo as head of the ODI squad.

IPL 2014: Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings - Preview

IPL 2014: Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings - Preview
Mumbai: Their campaign back on track after tasting five successive losses in the UAE, defending champions Mumbai Indians will now face two-time title winners Chennai Super Kings in a potentially explosive no-holds-barred contest at the Wankhede Stadium here on Saturday.

The two arch-rivals are poised to go toe-to-toe in front of a packed crowd in the night game that is more crucial for the hosts and Champions League holders than their southern rivals who are sitting pretty at no. 2 on the points table with six wins from eight games.

Mumbai`s comprehensive back-to-back victories over table toppers Kings XI Punjab on May 3, followed by another well-merited one against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 6 in their well-fortified home venue has brought them right back into the race for the four play-off berths.

However, a first defeat in 11 games at this venue since tasting defeat in 2012 would virtually derail Mumbai`s quest for clinching back-to-back IPL crowns and emulating Super Kings` feat in 2010 and `11.

Mumbai would be eager to carry their winning momentum against the formidable Super Kings whose morale, especially its bowlers, could be down after the 44-run thrashing they got from Kings XI on May 7.

Chennai bowlers, ripped apart by Kings XI`s Glenn Maxwell and company, would find in-form captain Rohit Sharma and burly West Indian powerhouse Kieron Pollard major stumbling blocks.

Sharma, who made a superb 59 not out, and Pollard (43) put on a near century partnership for the fifth wicket against Bangalore in Mumbai`s previous game which helped the home team post their highest total of 187 this season.

Both these batsmen revel at Wankhede where the ball comes on to the bat nicely and are expected to be the main hurdles for Chennai`s varied bowling attack. Other Mumbai batsmen like Ambati Rayudu and Corey Anderson have made starts without launching into the big league, while new look opener Chidambaram Gautam has surprised the public with his big hits.

Super Kings batsmen too, especially the successful opening combination of Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith, apart from Suresh Raina (212 runs from 8 games) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (147), would also relish the surface which is good for stroke play. West Indian Smith is pretty much used to the Wankhede track having played for Mumbai before shifting base and is the leading run getter (339) for his team along with New Zealand captain McCullum (314).

Both teams have a well balanced attack with Lasith Malinga (9 wickets) for Mumbai and Mohit Sharma (14) for Chennai being the most successful medium pace bowlers.

The hosts have beefed up their pace attack, which has been hit heavy by the injury to Zaheer Khan, by including UP swing bowler Praveen Kumar after Pawan Suyal proved very expensive against RCB. If Mumbai have the fighting Harbhajan Singh (6 wickets) to bank upon for applying the brakes in the middle overs, Chennai have their spin twins - Ravindra Jadeja (11) and Ravichandran Ashwin (7) - to do this job.

Chennai, however, seems to be missing their top all-rounder Dwayne Bravo who was ruled out of the season after getting injured in their first game.Dew fall could be a factor for the team bowling second. Mumbai had the upper hand over their rivals last year by winning three out of their four clashes of the season, their lone defeat coming in the first qualifier at Delhi which they avenged in the all-important final in Kolkata and became champions.

Teams (from): Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (C), Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Harbhajan Singh, Ambati Rayudu, Michael Hussey, Pragyan Ojha, Corey Anderson, Praveen Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, CM Gautam, Aditya Tare, Apoorv Wankhade, Marchant de Lange, Krishmar Santokie, Ben Dunk, Pawan Suyal, Sushant Marathe, Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Gopal, Lendl Simmons.

Chennai Super Kings: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (C), Suresh Raina, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Faf du Plessis, Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith, Ashish Nehra, Mohit Sharma, Samuel Badree, Ben Hilfenhaus, Matt Henry, B Aparajith, Mithun Manhas, Ishwar Pandey, Pawan Negi, Vijay Shankar, Ronit More, John Hastings.

Put into bat, KXIP batsmen again fired unison to score an imposing 198 for eight with in-form David Miller smashing 66 off 29 balls.

In reply, RCB could manage only 166 for nine as AB de Villiers ran out of partners despite another heroic effort hitting 53 off 26 balls.

KXIP remain on top of the table with 14 points from eight games while RCB stay on sixth place with six points from eight games.

Sandeep Sharma again proved his mettle with early strikes as he had another terrific day with figures of 3 for 25. But the surprise package was an unheralded 20-year-old off-spinner Shivam Sharma playing his first competitive match at the senior level.

Bowling like a classical off-break bowler, who could both flight and turn the ball, Shivam had brilliant figures of two for 26 in four overs to show for his efforts.

Seamer Sandeep, who has been one of the discoveries of this IPL wreaked havoc as he blasted off the top-order during an inspired first spell. He angled one away from Chris Gayle (4) who flashed at it and Wriddhiman Saha pouched it behind stumps.

Off his very next delivery, which wasn`t a good one, he saw Virat Kohli trying to tuck it down leg side but managed to give Wriddhiman a catch down leg-side. This is Kohli`s third duck in the tournament and now shares the ignominy with KKR captain Gautam Gambhir.

Parthiv Patel hit a few lusty blows but was holed out in the deep extra cover region giving Sandeep his third wicket.

RCB were reeeling at 26 for three and it soon became 39 for four when Sachin Rana (18) was cleaned all ends up by an arm ball from Akshar Patel.

Yuvraj Singh (3) again wasted too many deliveries putting a lot of pressure on De Villiers before he was fooled by a flighted delivery from Shivam. He tossed it up and Yuvraj trying hit over mid-wicket saw the ball turn and Sehwag gobbled it at first slip.

The youngster was not afraid to flight and also got a bit of purchase off the pitch.

At the end of 10 overs, it was 52 for five and the match seemed as good as over.

Albie Morkel (16) hit a couple of sixes as Glenn Maxwell went for 24 in his single over. However young Shivam got his second wicket when Morkel went for a hoick only to be caught George Bailey at short third-man.

De Villiers however carried on from where he had left against Sunrisers as he completed his 50 off 25 balls with successive sixes of Lakshmipathy Balaji.

Having hit five sixes, De Villiers was unlucky trying to hit the sixth one when Balaji fired one wide and his slog over cover was talen by the fielder at the ropes.

Once De Villiers was gone, it became a mere formality for the visitors.

Earlier, Miller smashed his way to a 29-ball-66 as Kings XI Punjab`s batting clicked yet again posing a challenging score of 198 for eight after being put into bat.

Miller and Wriddhiman Saha (17) steadied the innings after KXIP slumped to 116 for four in 11.4 overs as Virender Sehwag and Mandeep Singh gave a rollicking start to the visitors adding 60 runs in 35 balls. Sehwag again scored 30 but more importantly provided the momentum.

Glenn Maxwell again blasted his way to 25 off 10 balls before being holed out at the deep mid-wicket fence off Yuzvendra Chahal`s bowling trying to go for his third six. Maxwell also hit a couple of boundaries.

One of the finds of this IPL, Chahal was the pick of the bowlers with figures of two for 23 in four overs.

Once Miller got set, the South African left-hander scored runs at a brisk pace. He hit eight boundaries and three sixes off only 29 balls before departing in the 17th over of the KXIP innings.

Saha also contributed in Punjab's massive total by supporting Miller as they notched up 54 runs in only 4.5 overs.

The RCB wicketkeeper was scalped by Harshal Patel at long-off by AB de Villiers, trying to loft a slower delivery.

Thereafter Akshar Patel and Shivam Sharma, who played his first match of the season, went cheaply, scoring two and four respectively.

The swashbuckling Sehwag, whose 30 had five boundaries against his name gave a solid start to Punjab by putting on 60 with Mandeep (21) for the opening stand.

Maxwell smacked Yuvraj Singh out of the park for two sixes and a four, thus collecting 19 runs in eighth over of visitor's innings.

As he was looking to take the game away from Bangalore, Maxwell fell prey to Chahal after he was holed out at deep mid-wicket where Mitchell Starc took a well-judged catch just a few inches from the ropes.

It was left to Miller and Bailey, who had a decent unbeaten 40 in the previous match against Chennai, to repair the innings as Punjab slumped to 93 for three in the ninth over.

Bailey, who also did not get a long hit in the middle because of the inform top-order batsmen this season, was out poking at the away-going ball off Morkel for one after playing seven balls.
